Make the most of your Tasmania holiday by driving in luxurious comfort. When traveling in the winter months we recommend an AWD or 4WD hire car in case you encounter some snow or ice in the Tasmanian highlands.

All listed Car Rental companies provide excellent pick-up facilities at Tasmania’s two main arrival destinations – Hobart Airport and Launceston Airport. These airports are quite small and offer very short walking distances between luggage pickup points to the Car Rental parking outside.

Driving a Hire Car in Tasmania

You will find that driving your Hire Car in Tasmania is a very pleasurable and sometimes exhilarating experience. From winding highland roads to beautiful coastal drives, there is always another memorable sight around the next bend.

Apart from there being no toll roads in Tasmania you will also experience hassle free driving with minimal vehicles on the road. Be sure to allow extra driving time though as some roads can be quite winding and also factor in for a number of scenic stops along the way.

Tasmania is a driver’s destination.  Whilst comparatively smaller than other Australian states, our island has varied terrain and landscapes to entertain you. There are very few freeways but our roads are mostly well-maintained and traffic is relatively light.

When estimating driving distances, you should always allow extra time. Tasmanian roads can be winding and steep, especially on the east and west coasts.  Besides this, you will find many tempting spots to stop and explore along the way!

When planning your itinerary you will see roads catergorised as A,  B or C:

·      A roads are major sealed highways

·      B roads are secondary sealed roads

·      C roads are often unsealed

Some unsealed roads require extra care.  Be aware that Overdrive Rental Agreements contain special conditions in relation to unsealed roads.  Overdrive cars cannot be used on roads other than A, B and C roads.  Convertibles are not to be driven on C roads with the top open or windows down.

During the winter months, and occasionally spring, highland roads may become icy and snow is possible.  Please take the usual safety precautions and, if in doubt, discuss the driving conditions with us.
